From today, the free multilingual automatic translator for computers and mobile is available in Elhuyar: itzultzailea.eus.

Based on state-of-the-art technology based on artificial intelligence and neural networks, Elhuyar has developed an automatic translator who knows the three main languages of Euskal Herria (Euskera, Spanish and French) and Catalan and Galician and has made it available to society free of charge.

The Elhuyar translator can be used on the web itzultzailea.eus or downloading the app on the mobile. Translations between Euskera, Spanish, French, Catalan and Galician can be made both in one and the other. To do this, simply write the appropriate text, select the language in which we want the result and press the “Translate” button.

In the case of the mobile PPP, moreover, it is not necessary to insert the text in the application itself. When we're reading anything, we select the text, we press the copy button and we get the icon of the Elhuyar translator. By clicking on it, he brings us directly to the application and the text we have copied appears written in the corresponding text table.

Elhuyar's R&D engineers have used the most innovative technologies to develop the automatic translator, including artificial intelligence and neural networks. It is very comfortable and easy to use and flexible to be able to offer advanced services to customers who want it according to their needs. In fact, the Elhuyar Automatic Translator allows you to translate the documents in full format in a few seconds and introduce the system anywhere, through the REST API: into professional translators tools (Wordfast, SDL Trados Studio...), on user websites and CMS, in corporate authentication systems (Single Sign On)…

Elhuyar's trajectory in linguistic technologies

Since its founding in 1972, Elhuyar has had the vocation to link languages to science and technology and is a reference in the treatment of the Basque language and the languages surrounding it. In 2002 he started his research in the field of language technologies with the Hizkin21 project, and two years later he addressed the machine translation. Since then he has participated in several projects in this area and made available the services:

• In 2007, along with the UPV Ixa research group, the first automatic translator of Spanish > Euskera was placed on the network: [Matxin]. It was a rule-based system, developed in open source.
• In 2011, following the technological trends of the time, a translator based on statistical systems came along that translated in both directions: from the Basque to Spanish and from Spanish to the Basque.
• In 2016, Ametzagaiña, the UPV Ixa research team, along with ISEA and Vicomtech, launched the Modela research project, based on artificial intelligence and neural networks, and since 2018 the first intelligent automatic translator in Euskera modela.eus is available. The translation of Spanish into Basque and Basque into Spanish has greatly improved the results of the previous ones.

Since then, Elhuyar has continued to investigate and, combining its experience in the field of technologies and languages, has improved the quality of translations between Spanish and Basque and has integrated other languages into its new translator. Thus, it can be used to translate among the three main languages of Euskal Herria (Euskera, Spanish and French), as well as to translate and produce texts in Catalan and Galician.
