Characteristics of the dictionary

To date, the dictionary contains a total of 3,600 concepts related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This information is already accessible to anyone on the web www.2030agendahiztegia.eus.

For each word collected in the dictionary, users will find the following information: definition, terms and area. Both the terms and definitions and the web interface are presented in three languages: Basque, Spanish and English. In addition, the website offers complementary information and the possibility to consult other dictionaries related to this subject.

When accessing the website, the user will find an attractive and clean interface. Once a term is selected, the conceptual profile(s) associated with the information of the terms in the three languages, area and definition will be displayed. In some cases a note will also be shown to consult other concepts related to the term searched.

The dictionary also offers the possibility to disseminate the concept sheet on social networks, as well as to make observations or proposals on its content. In addition, the terms sought can also be consulted directly in other dictionaries: Encyclopedic Dictionary of Science and Technology, Elhuyar Dictionary and Wikipedia.

Finally, if the search term is not answered, the user may make a proposal to include it in the dictionary. This dictionary aims to be a lively and dynamic resource open to be improved and expanded with the comments and proposals that users can make through the web.

The three project promoters have made the Multilingual Dictionary of the 2030 Agenda available to the United Nations, in particular the Secretariat of the 2030 Local Coalition, located in Bilbao. This is a contribution made by the Basque Country to the process of locating the SDGs. A process in which the languages and cultures of each country are cross-cutting axes of the commitment to the 2030 Agenda.

Genesis of this project

This project has its starting point in the industrial group of machine tools and advanced manufacturing Danobatgroup which, when implementing its sustainability strategy, detected the need to work the terminology in this field and developed a glossary with terms and definitions in Spanish and English.

Subsequently, Danobatgroup considered the need to also transfer this terminology to the Basque country and resorted to the advice of Elhuyar who, from his experience in the elaboration of other dictionaries of a sectoral or professional scope, joined the project. The technical work of Elhuyar has consisted in collecting, proposing terms and translating definitions to the Basque country, as well as classifying the concepts by area and designing a website with all the content available to society.

The proposal was submitted to the General Secretariat for Social Transition and the 2030 Agenda of the Basque Government and converged with the axes of Lehendakaritza's action regarding the promotion of the SDGs in the Basque Country. The project has been financed and supervised by the Directorate of Social Innovation Basque Government.

In this regard, it should be noted that the 17 SDGs do not include any objective specifically related to culture and minority languages. In the Basque Country and in many other places on the planet, different actions are being developed that incorporate a SDG 18 linked to cultural and linguistic diversity.

The Basque Government in particular has launched a process under the 2030 Agenda to provide specific content to this SDG 18. This process is part of the elaboration and presentation of this dictionary of the 2030 Agenda, which seeks to enrich and promote action in Basque in the field of Sustainable Development Goals.
