Elhuyar offers for free a new resource to learn English from the Basque language, without the need for bridging languages. From today you can consult online the Euskera-English Collins Elhuyar dictionary on the web hiztegiak.elhuyar.eus. This resource will allow Euskaldunes who study English not to have to use an English-Spanish dictionary or an English-French dictionary as a bridge. The dictionary has a total of 65,100 entries, divided into two sections: in the Euskera-English section, 31.700 entries and in the English-Euskera section, 33,400.
The first version of this dictionary was published on paper in 2016. For the English-Basque section, the work was based on the Collins Concise Spanish Dictionary, in addition to the Euskaltzaindia Dictionary, as a fundamental reference, and on the Euskera-Spanish dictionary of Ehuyar. The Collins editorial has been very pleased with his collaboration with Elhuyar in a project of this kind, something essential to elaborate the dictionary we are dealing with.
Since that first paper publication, the dictionary has had several updates, and the most recent version is available on the Elhuyar general dictionaries website, along with Euskera-Castilian and Euskera-French dictionaries.
Like all other Elhuyar dictionaries, this new dictionary is alive and dynamic, and will be permanently updated. It will be a useful tool for the daily work of many users. It will, for example, be an essential tool for translators, students and teachers and, in general, for anyone interested in languages.
