The number of visits from Elhuyar Hiztegia increased in 2022: the website has had 50% more visits (exceeding 6 million visits) and users have made more than 50 million visits. These data demonstrate the growing use of the dictionary.

This resource is constantly updated. In 2022, for example, 966 new entries have been incorporated (anti-mirror, autozainketa, heteronormatibo…) and changes have been made in 1,003 other units (liburu-euskarri, ahogozagari…). For these updating tasks, the dictionary has been assisted by the Vice-Ministry of Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government.

In addition to these updates, Elhuyar Hiztegia aims to use an egalitarian language, and to ensure that this is the case, several vocabulary samples have been analyzed in 2022, examining the contents with a gender perspective and reviewing and adapting any discriminatory use of the lexicon and language to take steps towards a dictionary that guarantees treatment without inequalities or discrimination. This review has been carried out at two levels: on the one hand, the entries that can be considered as an exclusive lexicon have been marked with the corresponding pejorative brand (ematxar, maritxu); on the other, an exhaustive review of the dictionary examples has been made to avoid gender stereotypes (haragikoi) and to ensure the visibility of the woman ("sarrailagile gisa lan egin nuen: worked as a cerrajera. In this line of work, Elhuyar has had the collaboration of Laboral Kutxa.

To make all these changes, Elhuyar Hiztegia uses various sources: different corpus, content extracted from other resources, the dictionary of Euskaltzaindia and the comments and proposals of the users.

New Elhuyar Hiztegia app for desktop

The new year adds the possibility to install Elhuyar Hiztegia on your computer. An application has been developed to install the dictionary on the desktop itself and consult it directly from there. This application lets you see the words in Basque, Spanish, French or English in Elhuyar Hiztegia from any computer program. To do this, simply select the word you want to consult with the cursor and press these two consecutive orders: [Ctrl + C] and [Ctrl + space bar]. Thus, the information collected in Elhuyar HIztegia will appear in a new window.

The application is available for Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems and has been developed with funding from the Vice Ministry of Language Policy of the Basque Government.
