Elhuyar has published the book Sustainability Research, for the inspiration of young people to discuss sustainability in class. The project was supported by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. The book offers teachers a number of projects and reflections on environmental responsibility. It is about providing resources that serve as inspiration and support to the educational community, as today’s young people will inevitably have to get involved in order to cope with the environmental emergency. Therefore, it is of great interest to promote in the classroom the reflection and also various activities on the climate emergency, without losing sight of equality, inclusiveness and social change.

The book is the result of Elhuyar’s project “2022-2023 Mesa de los Gluones, to inspire young people for the future.” Within this project, Elhuyar has organized meetings between different experts and experts to discuss sustainability, environmental emergency and education, and the book has included the contents derived from the reflections and works of these meetings.

The book, composed of explanatory texts and illustrations by Pernan Goñi, consists of two main sections. The first presents 20 key ideas to address sustainability and environmental emergency in the classroom. The second contains 20 inspiring projects proposed by researchers to address sustainability. Through these projects, students should answer questions such as: how many loaves can be baked with the energy needed to travel 100 km in a certain car? Where does our educational center lose energy? Is the clothes we wear sustainable? What kinds of plastics contaminate beaches?

In addition, in the coming months Elhuyar will disseminate the book’s content by publishing comic strips illustrated by Pernan Goñi on social media as well as in the STEAM zientzia.eus/steam education section of the web zientzia.eus. Interviews will also be published with the expert personnel who have participated in the project, to get to know their research projects and deepen the project proposals made for the students.
