The documentary Erresistor ("Resistant"), produced and produced by Elhuyar, aims to publicize the problem of bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics. And that is, superbugs will make infectious diseases a serious health problem. According to the World Health Organization, by 2050, superbugs will be present worldwide and cause more deaths than cancer.

The problem caused by resistant bacteria will be more serious than that caused by SARS-COV-2, as modern medicine needs antibiotics for almost everything, and these are no longer effective.

Bego Zubia Gallastegi is director and screenwriter of the documentary Erresistor. The documentary puts on the table a problem that affects the entire planet, through the testimonies of researchers, doctors and veterinarians. The documentary collects the voice of people who got sick and were able to recover, it will show us that this can happen to anyone, but it also wants to highlight that it is possible to cope with the problem. In this sense, we will have the opportunity to know the details of a treatment that is new in the Spanish state, while listening to the experiences of one of its first patients. “We will be shocked by the testimony of those who have managed to overcome the infection, while bringing to light the serious consequences of the increase in resistant bacteria. All this will help us to address the problem, as part of the solution is in the hands of all of us.” These are the words with which the director of Erresistor summarizes the essence of the documentary.

It is a constructive documentary that exposes the possible solutions through its protagonists, who must face this serious problem. Although the solution does not depend solely on them, we will have the following important contributions, among others: Lucía Gallego Andrés, member of PRAN and researcher at the Faculty of Medicine at UPV/EHU; Itziar Alkorta Calvo, professor at the Faculty of Sciences at UPV/EHU and PhD in Chemistry; Pilar Domingo Calap, researcher and pioneer of phage therapy; María Neira González With all of them, the camera has entered laboratories, farms, purifiers, rivers and hospitals, because resistant bacteria are everywhere.

The gender perspective has been very present in the documentary, both in the selection of people who offer their testimony and in the selection of scientific and medical personnel. The research teams are led by women who also practice in consultation and in homes, as they also work outside the laboratory dedicated to finding solutions to resistant bacteria.

This documentary, which will soon be available on television, has been carried out in collaboration with the FECYT (Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Innovation) and the Department of Culture and Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government, as well as with the participation of EITB. In addition, the documentary participated in the Audiovisual Project LAB project of the Audiovisual Producers Association APIKA in 2022. The aim of this project is to promote the production of audiovisual projects, as well as to promote emerging talent and to boost the audiovisual fabric.
