The cycle of colloquiums “Emakume zientzialarien argitan” returns.
- As a result of the collaboration between Elhuyar and Donostia Kultura, the cycle of colloquia started in 2021 will continue in autumn.
- This initiative will provide the opportunity to know through personal interviews scientists working in different fields.
- The talks will be held in Basque, on Mondays at 19:00, and will be held in the Hall of Events of the Ernest Lluch Cultural Center.
The cycle of Emakume zientzialarien argitan / In the light of the scientists, organized by Elhuyar and Donostia Kultura, will continue in the autumn. Three sessions are scheduled: the first on 23 October, the second on 10 November and the last on 20 December.
The objective of this project is to know the work of the scientists, since their contributions have been relegated and hidden in the history of science and technology, and even today discrimination against women in this area remains evident.
Through personal interviews, we will have the opportunity to meet three scientists who work in different fields: Watch Vives Urbieta, Uzuri Albizu Mallea and Onintze Salazar Perez. Answering the questions of Ana Galarraga Aiestaran, Elhuyar's scientific disseminator, will explain the reasons that drive them to research, the questions they seek answers, the situations that have surprised them most and the difficulties they face. In addition, they will recommend their favorite books to overcome the stereotype of the “two cultures” (sciences and humanities).
Autumn Colloquium Cycle 2023
The first colloquium will take place on 23 October. The interviewee will be the architect Miren Vives Urbieta and the title of the colloquium will be Nola diseinatu hiri eta etxe bizigarriak eta osasungarriak denontzat (How to design habitable and healthy homes for all). To promote fairer and healthier cities and neighborhoods, diagnostics and projects can be used based on the impact that urbanized and constructed environments have on people's daily lives and physical, mental and social well-being. This takes into account different perspectives such as gender, active ageing, autonomous childhood, functional diversity or economic capacity.
After completing his studies at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de San Sebastián in 2002, Miren Vives worked for six years at the office Arrizabalaga Arquitectos de Markina-Xemein. At the same time, he launched a small architectural firm together with his partner Patxi Galarraga. Along with the usual rehabilitation and small projects, they had the opportunity to work on accessibility issues in a complex apartment in Lanzarote. The contact with the world of inclusion and the experience of raising two daughters opened their eyes to many other themes, among which children, old age and how not, feminism stand out. Gradually, the profession was merging with personal experiences and learning, and nowadays they have little to do with an architecture firm for use. Projekta Urbes promote healthier and fairer cities and neighborhoods.
The second scientist interviewed will be Uzuri Albizu Mallea. It will focus on mathematics, and the colloquium will be held on 20 November under the title Matematika, gertutik eta barrutik (Mathematics from near and from within). In society, the belief is widespread that only particularly intelligent people can learn and understand mathematics. Moreover, it is usually a man who embodies that stereotyped image of genius. This has a clear influence on the students: at the age of six, the girls underestimate their capacity and shut down for them some paths for the future.
Uzuri Albizu Mallea holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and has three master's degrees: Teaching Mathematics, High School Teachers and Feminist and Gender Studies. He works in the Department of Didactic Mathematics, Experimental Sciences and Social Sciences of the Faculty of Education and Sport of Vitoria-Gasteiz. In 2023 he presented his doctoral thesis within the program Feminist and Gender Studies of the UPV/EHU, whose title is Matematika, hezkuntza eta generoa gurutzatzen diren lekuak. Ahots feministek lagundutako kartografia bat (The place where mathematics, education and gender intersect. A cartography helped by feminist voices).
The latest colloquium, which will be held on 11 December, will feature Onintze Salazar Perez and will be entitled Eguraldia aldatu da, edo aldaketa klimatikoagatik da? (Has the weather changed or is it due to climate change? ).
Lately we have witnessed numerous extreme weather phenomena: floods, droughts, rainforests... Along with this, we also see obvious changes in our environment: the Pyrenean glaciers are disappearing, the animals change their migratory habits, the structure and extent of the vegetation also change. It is also said about time that it is no longer before.
Onintze Salazar Perez holds a degree in Physics, Meteorology and a master's degree in Environmental Engineering and another in Scientific Culture. She is a researcher at the Department of Energy and Environment in Tecnalia, she works as a meteorologist in the Basque Country, and regularly collaborates with the various media in the EiTB group.
The three colloquiums will be held in Euskera, on Mondays at 19:00, in the hall of events of the Ernest Lluch Cultural Center.
The audios of the colloquiums will also be heard in the Donostia Kultura Irratia (DK Irratia) and the Elhuyar website zientzia.eus.
