The colloquium cycle "In the light of women scientists" will address Alzheimer's, the philosophy of science and ecology

2024 | March 01
  • The colloquium cycle organized by Elhuyar and Donostia Kultura will have three sessions in the spring of 2024.
  • Through personal interviews, topics of social interest will be discussed with scientists working in different areas.
  • The talks will be held in Basque at 19:00 in the hall of events of the House of Culture Ernest Lluch.

The colloquium cycle ‘In the light of women scientists’ is organized jointly by Elhuyar and Donostia Kultura. Three sessions are scheduled for this spring: one on 12 March, another on 16 April and the last on 7 May.

The objective of this project is to get to know women scientists, because in the history of science and technology the contributions of women have been relegated and hidden, and even today discrimination against women remains evident in this area.
Through personal interviews led by Ana Galarraga Aiestaran, scientific discoverer of Elhuyar, there will be an opportunity to meet three women scientists working in different fields Miren Altuna Azkargorta, Arantza Etxeberria Agiriano and Aitziber Sarobe Egiguren.

Spring cycle of colloquia 2023

The first colloquium will take place on 12 March. The protagonist will be the neurologist Miren Altuna Azkargorta, and the title will be as follows: "Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's".

Neurologist Miren Altuna Azkargorta (Zarautz, 1988) investigates degenerative diseases of the brain, especially Alzheimer's. He will discuss the latest advances that have occurred: diagnosis, treatment… In this last aspect, he will highlight the importance of healthy lifestyle habits. He will also talk about Down syndrome. In fact, all people with this syndrome who live long enough develop Alzheimer's.

Next, the philosopher Arantza Etxeberria Agiriano will speak. The second talk will take place on 16 April, under the title “The place where philosophy, science and living things cross”.

Arantza Etxeberria Agiriano (Oñati, 1962) is a professor in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at UPV/EHU and researcher at the IAS Research Group on Life, Mind and Society. It addresses issues such as autonomy and individuality in biology and medicine, the evolutionary biology of development, the biological view of death and, in the philosophy of science, classifications in science and society (gender, race).

The third protagonist will be biologist Aitziber Sarobe Egiguren on May 7. Title of the talk: “What really mean concepts such as sustainable, transition, ecological, etc. ?».

Aitziber Sarobe Egiguren (Zarautz, 1974) is a PhD in biology and specialises in ecology. She is a professor at HUHEZI and, as part of her activism, is part of the nature group of Zarautz Arkamurka and the Gipuzkoan ecologist group Naturkon. She has been working for the conservation of nature for years and, from this perspective and from scientific evidence, she believes that some decisions have been made and are being made around the territory.

The three colloquia will be in Euskera, at 19:00 hours, in the hall of acts of the house of culture Ernest Lluch.

The audio of the colloquiums will also be heard in DK Irratia's posters and on the Elhuyar website zientzia.eus. In addition, zientzia.eus has created a new podcast section of “In the light of women scientists”, where you will also be able to listen to the lectures of all the women who have participated in this cycle of colloquia.
