Elhuyar will be at BEC’s Christmas Playground for the first time with science and technology activities
- Elhuyar will have a place called “STEAM gunea”, where workshops, gazans and shows will take place for children and young people.
- The workshops will seek to encourage children and adolescents to become fond of science and technology.
- They will be conducted by female researchers, thus avoiding erroneous stereotyped images about the professionals of science and technology.
- It is an initiative promoted by the STEAM Euskadi area of the Basque and Innobasque Government.
Elhuyar will come for the first time to the Giant Christmas Playground which takes place in BEC with science and technology activities for children and young people. These activities will take place from December 14 to January 5 in the corner called "STEAM gunea", a space created with the collaboration of the STEAM Euskadi area of the Basque and Innobasque Government.
The workshops of this "STEAM gunea" have as their main objective to promote interest in science and technology through dynamic and practical experiences, while fostering capacities such as critical thinking, creativity, problem solving and teamwork.
In addition to the workshops, there will also be gincanas and shows. The workshop themes will be Biopolymers, Microscale Nature, Light and Holograms, Mini-robot Racing, Landing Structures, Thermopolymers and NFC Tags. The STEAM Gazans, for their part, will force participants to overcome various scientific and technological challenges. Finally, there will be three shows aimed at all ages: Vacuum pump, Electricity and spectacular chemistry.
All workshops and shows will be led by female researchers, women who represent the future of science and technology. Benchmarks are essential to inspire new generations and foster interest in STEM disciplines. The participation of women scientists, in addition to breaking gender stereotypes, provides participants with a close and realistic picture of the meaning of working in STEM.

Bizilabe, research centres for young people
The workshops are part of the Bizilabe de Elhuyar leisure offer. Bizilabe has 8 research centres aimed at young people between the ages of 10 and 16, based in Bilbao, Elgoibar, Laudio and Abanto-Zierbena and with the aim of promoting a commitment to science and technology at an early age. There are more than 200 young people registered annually. Bizilabe is a project carried out with the support of the Basque Government and the collaboration of several local entities (Bilbao City Hall, Elgoibar City Hall, Laudio City Hall and Abanto-Zierbena City Hall).
