The solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 will be one of the most important astronomical events of recent years: it will be the only total solar eclipse visible in the Basque Country during the last 100 years. It is an eclipse that will reach across the Arctic and Greenland, starting from the west and moving away to the east. 

The digital media Elhuyar Zientzia, aware of the importance of the event, has made a wide range of content available to society. It includes audio pills under the title “Eklipse-tantak” (Drops of Eclipse), written resources, audiovisuals and other content in a monographic band created for the occasion. 

Among other contents, the June issue of Elhuyar magazine will dedicate a monograph to the solar eclipse. Through reports, the magazine Elhuyar will report on the scientific part of solar eclipses, their influence on living beings and the latest research on the Sun itself. It can be read both in the digital and in the paper version. In addition, the new subscribers will receive as a gift some glasses to see the eclipse.  

The resources will be incorporated dynamically until August, with special programs by Norteko Ferrokarrila in the Basque Country Irratia and Teknopolis in the Basque Country Telebista. All of them will be accessible in the monographic band.

Norteko Ferrokarrila radio program

The radio program of the Basque Country Irratia Norteko Ferrokarrila will offer a program on the eclipse in which several astronomers will participate. It will be at the end of the season, on June 26, and although it will mainly deal with the total solar eclipse that will occur in August, the phenomenon will also be analyzed from a scientific point of view.

Teknopolis TV Show

On the weekend of June 20, the last show this season will be dedicated to the eclipse of August 12. The program will talk about the scientific aspects behind this astronomical phenomenon and the cosmic secrets that the sudden darkening can reveal. Since an eclipse is a good time to investigate about the Sun or to validate previous investigations.

Workshops and conferences

In addition to the resources mentioned above, Elhuyar has prepared workshops for young people and talks for adults, to respond to the interest that the phenomenon has generated in society. On the one hand, there will be workshops to understand the eclipse, see it safely and arouse curiosity for science. On the other hand, in the informative talk “Eklipsea, zorioneko itzala” (The eclipse, such a shadow), the historical and scientific implications of the event will be explained, in addition to the spectacularity of the eclipse.
