The cycle of colloquiums “In the light of women scientists” will address the issue of negationism

2024 | October 02
  • The cycle is organized by Elhuyar and Donostia Kultura, and will consist of three sessions in the fall of 2024.
  • Through personal interviews, the issue of negationism with scientists working in different areas will be discussed.
  • The talks will be held in Basque at 19:00 in the hall of events of the House of Culture Ernest Lluch.

The colloquium cycle “In the Light of Women Scientists” is organized jointly by Elhuyar and Donostia Kultura. In the autumn, three sessions will be offered under the title “Negationism, the science of all citizens and the trajectories of research”. It will be 8 October, 5 November and 10 December.

The objective of this project is to get to know women scientists, because in the history of science and technology the contributions of women have been relegated and hidden, and even today discrimination against women is still evident in this area.
Through personal interviews led by Ana Galarraga Aiestaran, Elhuyar's scientific disseminator, there will be an opportunity to meet three women scientists who work in different fields: Laida Arbizu Agirre, Olatz Ortega Vidales and Alaitz Etxabide Etxeberria.

Autumn cycle of colloquia 2024

The first meeting will take place on 8 October. The protagonist will be the philosopher Laida Arbizu Agirre (Ordizia). Laida is studying negationist attitudes in her PhD, and in the colloquium she will address this topical issue: the ways in which negationism takes place in the times in which we live, how it expands and how to face it. Not forgetting that negationism and conspiracy are also reflected in the political tendencies currently being imposed.

It is followed by biologist Olatz Ortega Vidales (Bilbao). Olatz studied biology, and then moved to Sweden to work in the area of empowerment of LGTBIQ+ people and people with intellectual disabilities. Subsequently, he completed the Erasmus Mundus Master's Degree in Ecotoxicology from the UPV/EHU. Currently, it works to achieve a more democratic and inclusive science; among other activities, it is part of the research group of the inclusive project of citizen science "Attention! Don't applaud me! ", from the Plentzia Marine Station. Your colloquium will take place on 5 November.

The third protagonist will be Alaitz Etxabide Etxeberria (Lesaka), a PhD in renewable materials engineering. Alaitz holds the Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Chemistry and the Master of Engineering in Renewable Materials, and is a PhD in Renewable Materials Engineering from the Gipuzkoa School of Engineering. Despite his youth, his trajectory has been intense: having visited several international universities, he is now engaged in research in a company. Thus, he knows well what similarities and differences exist between research at university and research in industry. In addition to providing its vision, it will expose the possibilities and limitations offered by renewable materials. On 10 December we will have the opportunity to participate in your colloquium.

The three colloquiums will be in Euskera, at 19:00 hours, in the hall of acts of the house of culture Ernest Lluch.

The audios of the colloquiums will also be heard in the Donostia Kultura DK Irratia and Elhuyar's website zientzia.eus. In addition, zientzia.eus has created a new podcast section of “In the Light of Women Scientists”, where you will also be able to listen to the lectures of all the women who have participated in this cycle of colloquia.
