The cycle of colloquiums “Emakume zientzialarien argitan” (In the light of women scientists) is organized jointly by Elhuyar and Donostia Kulture. Three sessions will be offered in the first quarter of the year: 24 February, 24 March and 28 April. The talks will be at 19:00 in the auditorium of the house of culture Ernest Lluch.
Through personal interviews conducted by Ana Galarraga Aiestaran, scientific populariser of Elhuyar, we will have the opportunity to meet three women scientists working in different fields: Virginia Garcia Pena, Usue Mori Carrascal and Mijo Lizarzaburu Garcia.
The aim of this project is to meet women scientists, because in the history of science and technology the contributions of women have been relegated and hidden, and even today discrimination against women is still evident in this area.
First semester of 2026
The first session will be on February 24. The talk will be given by Virginia Garcia Pena and will have the following title: “Eguzki-eklipse osoa, gertakari astronomikoa baino gehiago” (Total solar eclipse, more than an astronomical event). In fact, on August 26, a total solar eclipse can be seen from many parts of the Basque Country.
Virginia García Pena (Pasai Donibane, 1979) is an astronomer and active partner of the Aranzadi Science Society where she develops informative and educational projects. He joined the Board of Directors in 2016 and led the Department of Astronomy between 2018 and 2023. He worked for eight years as a planetarist in Eureka! Zientzia Museoa. Since 2021 he is part of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Astronomical Associations of Spain, and belongs to the Group of Women Astronomers promoted by that Federation.
Usue Mori Carrascal will be the protagonist of the second social gathering. The talk, which will take place on March 24, is entitled “Adrégime artifiziala, begirada kritiko batetik” (Artificial intelligence, from a critical perspective).
Usue Mori Carrascal (Donostia, 1987) has a degree in Mathematics and has completed several master’s degrees, in mathematical modelling, intelligent systems and teaching, among others. She is an associate professor at the EHU Faculty of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, and in addition to her academic work she contributes to adapt artificial intelligence to the real needs of society.
The third speaker will be Mijo Lizarzaburu Garcia, a transfeminist philosopher and activist against gordophobia, who will speak on April 28 under the title “Lodiphobia, gorputzen diziplinamendua eta kontrol soziala” (Gordophobia, body discipline and social control).
Mijo Lizarzaburu Garcia (Ondarroa, 1998) currently participates in the doctoral program Philosophy, Science and Values of the University of the Basque Country, in the ICA-Research group. In addition, she is a well-known feminist activist. He mainly researches gordophobia and the discipline and pathologization of bodies as a political strategy.
The three colloquiums will be held in Euskera, at 19:00, in the auditorium of the house of culture Ernest Lluch.
The audios of the colloquiums can be heard in the podcasts of DK Irratia from Donostia Kcultura and in the “Emakume zientzialarien argitan” from Elhuyar. In the latter you will be able to listen to the interventions of all the women who have participated in the cycle of tertulias.
