Managing information and knowledge
As the digital and global era advances, information and the managing of it becomes increasingly important. Today, there is a large amount of information accessible to the whole world. The Internet is a clear example of this. With this in mind, Elhuyar has created various tools to help to manage information and knowledge properly.
A multilingual semantic search engine
The amount of information that can be accessed over the Internet is growing and, what is more, it is in various languages. When most of us users are looking for information, we tend to use the most spoken language among those we use, while disregarding content in other languages and, as a result, the information we gather is poorer.
Faced with this situation, we at Elhuyar asked ourselves the following question: Would we not be able to obtain more valuable information if we could receive the results of a search in all the languages we know? Would we not obtain the information more easily if we ran the searches in our mother tongue? In fact, some pieces of research have shown that users feel more comfortable when they look for information in their mother tongue. Besides, bilingualism is not an isolated phenomenon: in Europe, for example, half the population is bilingual. In this respect, thanks to our multilingual semantic search engine, many users will be able to start with their mother tongues but be able to obtain content in other languages that they also know.
Multilingual semantic browsing
To improve browsing between documents, we propose multilingual semantic browsing. That way, we would offer the user (the information consumer) complementary information. The system we have developed is capable of identifying semantic connections between web documents. So by making use of these connections, it offers improved browsing that facilitates the gathering of information. This system also addresses another problem linked to globalisation: multilingualism. At the end of the day, knowledge and information can be gathered in many languages. So to broaden the scope when obtaining information, what is needed is a browsing system capable of working with various languages.
It is becoming increasingly clear that companies need tools to maintain or increase productivity, and to facilitate renewal processes. Today, they have to go to the Internet and look for this knowledge and resources, as it is the world’s biggest store of information. The tools that carry out these functions, i.e., the ones that obtain knowledge and information from the Internet are known as: «competition watch», «technology watch» or «clipping».
Elhuyar has created a useful platform that meets this need by applying natural language processing techniques while bearing in mind the multilingual nature of the Internet.
Since the Web 2.0 concept was created, it has been possible to find on the Internet millions of user opinions about various subjects, products, institutions and individuals. The Web 2.0 concept constituted a paradigm change in the flow of information. Users were no longer mere receivers of content and became creators of content. What is more, their assessments and opinions are also stored in this content. In general, most of the opinions are scattered across the Internet’s text content.
Elhuyar has created a tool for managing reputation or brand: it automatically gathers and prepares the content relating to an item requested by the user. In order to obtain a summary that is as detailed as possible, the platform resorts to a range of sources and is capable of working in various languages.
