Elhuyar and the UPV-EHU’s Aholab group have developed a technology based on voice synthesis (Text-To-Speech) that allows webpages to be listened to. That way the users of these websites can listen to their content in Basque, Spanish, English, Catalan and Galician.
These are just some of the benefits that would be provided by incorporating language technologies into a company or organisation.
- It is an extra service for sight-impaired or disabled users, as it gives them the chance to “read” internet content. Some research suggests that between 15% and 20% of the population has some kind of disability relating to comprehension or language learning (dyslexia, etc.).
- In the mobile phone era it facilitates reading when screen size, movement etc. could be obstacles.
- It provides an opportunity to make an organisation’s content more accessible by spreading it among a larger number of users and thus creating a new channel of communication.
This technology has already been applied to Elhuyar dictionaries, the Hizkuna platform for company language management, the Matxin Basque-Spanish machine translator, and the websites of the Elhuyar magazine, Zientzia.net, Xuxen.eus and EITB.eus.
